Bactericide, virucide, fungicide—these terms appear on cleaning product technical data sheets, but their meaning remains unclear for many facility managers. Choosing the right product is not a minor detail. A product effective against bacteria is not necessarily effective against viruses, and vice versa.
This article explains the difference between these products in simple terms, how to read their efficacy, and how to ensure they are used correctly in your offices. This is not a scientific document, but a practical reference for your cleanliness challenges.
What Does Disinfection Mean?
Disinfection refers to the destruction of microorganisms present on a surface, object, or area. To render these microorganisms inactive, there are five main families of products, each suited to a specific type of organism.
- Bactericide for bacteria
- Levuricide for yeasts
- Fungicide for fungi, yeasts, and molds
- Sporicide for bacterial spores
- Virucide for viruses
In an office environment, bacteria are often the primary concern, particularly in washrooms. The role of a cleaning company is to ensure that the products used are appropriate and that staff are trained in their proper use.
What Is the Difference Between Bactericide and Virucide?
The distinction lies in the target. A bactericidal product destroys bacteria. A virucidal product neutralizes viruses. These are two different actions: a product can be bactericidal without being virucidal, virucidal without being bactericidal, or combine multiple properties at once.
This is why you don’t choose a disinfectant “at random.” You choose it based on the risk you want to address in a given area.
How to Read a Product’s Efficacy: Canadian Standards
In Canada, the efficacy of a product against microorganisms is governed by specific standards. Health Canada, through the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD), oversees the market authorization of biocides (surface disinfectants and sanitizers) .
Since May 31, 2025, surface disinfectants and sanitizers are regulated under the new Biocides Regulations (under the Food and Drugs Act), establishing a single regulatory framework for these products. Authorized products bear a unique 8-digit identification number, confirming they meet stringent standards for safety, efficacy, and quality.
To make an efficacy claim (e.g., bactericide, virucide), a product must meet the performance criteria set out in biocide test methods published by international standards organizations and referenced by Health Canada. These test methods demonstrate the product’s efficacy against specific classes of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi) under defined conditions.
For example, according to Health Canada’s Biocide monograph, a product containing a quaternary ammonium compound at a minimum concentration of 450 ppm, with a contact time of 10 minutes, can be labeled with a virucidal claim if supported by the appropriate test data.

Concretely, when you look at a disinfectant product, its label must specify which microorganisms it is effective against. The product’s DIN (Drug Identification Number) or market authorization number confirms that Health Canada has reviewed its efficacy data.
How to Use These Products Correctly
A good product used incorrectly does not disinfect. The technical data sheet specifies the conditions under which the product is truly effective. Three parameters must be respected:
- The dosage, i.e., the proportion of product and water to mix. Overdosing does not make the product more effective; it generates waste and risks.
- The water temperature. A product does not have the same efficacy at 5°C, 10°C, or 20°C.
- The contact time. The reaction that destroys microorganisms can take from a few seconds to several minutes. Wiping too soon cancels the effect.
This is precisely why training staff in the use of products and equipment is essential. Without training, the best product on the market loses its value.
